WHO WE ARE
MapWorks Tulsa, Inc. is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization with a diverse board of directors.
Our mission is to enhance the lives of Tulsa citizens and visitors by illuminating Tulsa’s diverse districts and serving as an introduction of the city’s spirit and energy. We foster unity, inclusion, and identity with an ambitious map design, an artistic lens and community outreach.
What We Do | THE TULSA MAP
We are actively engaged in creating a folded paper map with an online presence – an ambitious project designed through an artistic lens to highlight the elements of our community and reach out to visitors, residents and educational outlets about the benefits of the diversity of Tulsa represented on the map.
We believe Tulsa has something unique to offer. No map like this currently exists in Tulsa. In an age where all of us have navigation tools readily available, we believe a map can be something more. Rather than serving as a GPS, this map is designed to spark conversation and inspire citizens and visitors to experience Tulsa’s vibrant personality and cultural diversity by highlighting our local businesses, districts and rich history.
The Tulsa Map is a two-sided folded paper map with an online presence. The map front will be a unique art rendition of the City of Tulsa, and the back will display districts highlighting featured local businesses, venues, historical landmarks, and parks. Changes to The Tulsa Map will be updated every two years by a regional artist chosen by MapWorks Tulsa’s artist selection committee and art director. We continue to raise funds to print and distribute free maps to reach both Tulsa residents and visitors to our city in June 2022.
Our future plans include implementing an innovative MapWorks Tulsa educational outreach program for TPS students K -12 as well as workshops for members of the Tulsa community. In addition we hope to create a collaborative and interactive digital online Tulsa Map highlighting the history, personal story board, points of interest and diversity each community offers.
Research shows that the educational benefits of maps include development of critical thinking skills, understanding of technology, and collaboration – all of which leads to better academic outcomes.
Maps also teach skills such as geography and spatial awareness while providing cultural and historical context. Maps are an efficient and effective tool in the learning process.
The support we receive empowers MapWorks Tulsa to not only create The Tulsa Map and promote the unique vibe and opportunities of our city, but also to implement outreach programs educating both adults and youth on the benefits of mapping while appreciating the geography, diversity, culture and history of Tulsa.
